Following on from Jon Steel's advice to throw away your Blackberry and to get out of the office more, comes this line from Thomas Pynchon's 'Against The Day':
"If one spent one's whole day working and sleeping there would be no time for observation, let alone thought."

That's a great quote from Pynchon. Reminds me of a Japanese story about a boss who is taking a new employee for a tour of the office.
Strolling down a corridor they chance upon a worker leaning back in his chair, with his feet on the desk, staring out the window.
The new employee is shocked when the boss turns to him and puts his finger across his lips, motioning to the employee to tip toe silently past.
When the new employee asks the boss why he didn't do or say anything to the slacker, the boss replies that the man was obviously not to be disturbed, as he was thinking big thoughts.
