No, George Lucas based the AT-ATs from Star Wars on the German "Fuß Panzer", which in english means "walking tank". It was a prototype that was actually deployed on the eastern front against the soviets. While the firepower on the Fuß Panzer was impresive, it was easily out manuvered by soviet T-34s that would take them down by wraping the legs of the Fuß Panzer in steel cables.
